This Yakut drum has very complex imagery, some of which is obscured by the poor quality of the picture. The drum is bisected by a mountainous horizon marking the border with the upper world, and a mountainous horizon surrounds the whole drum, evocative of the phrase often heard in shamanic invocations--hangai delkhii, “mountainous world.” There are birds and a turge tree in the upper world with a bird sitting in its crown. Deer, a dog, and rows of dancers dominate the landscape of the middle world. At the bottom there is a smake symbolizing the water spirits and a prone figure, possible a shaman in ecstasy.
