Although this concept is common in European paganism, the opposite is held true in Tengerism.
In nomad society, the mother is central to the family. Men come and go due to hunting and war obligations. It is the mother that keeps the hearth going and is a steady influence on the family. Therefore, the woman is represented by the golden sun who is constant and beautiful. The man is represented by the moon which is quiet and powerful, yet comes and goes on his journeys in the sky.
